African cultures, religions, traditions, and epistemologies were subject to European erasure and replacement during Europe’s colonial occupation in Africa. Consequently, the post- colonial African identity, since the 20th Century, has been further complicated by the resulting hybridization, the effects of which extend to African cultural products like its cinemas.

In this seminar class, we are examining Post-colonial Africa and its cinematic articulation of an African identity. Looking at their aesthetics, industries, and social, historical and political contexts, we will explore how these cinemas navigate the complexities around identity, while also invoking new ways to challenge their European conceptualizations. In Sections I and II, we will explore traditional ways African Cinema has been theorized. In sections III and IV, we will explore potentially new ways to theorize African cinemas in relation to identity. Our study will take us through cinemas in North, West, South and East Africa.

As one of the chief competitors to the domination of Disney productions, it is necessary to understand the role that Marvel movies play within the animation industry. The focus of this course will be to challenge ways these films support in a reactionary manner the status quo at the expense of more nuanced depictions of race & ethnicities, gender, and social class. Students will deconstruct the core concerns of superhero narratives to understand exactly how these films are reflections of their times. Examining the underlying conservative politics, the compromised ideological reasoning, and the questionable construction of meanings should elucidate exactly how these films operate to influence, represent, construct, and distort popular culture.
